Terms and Conditions
I provide the following terms and conditions so you and I both come into the editing process with a clear understanding of what’s expected.
My editing services may include line edits, copyedits, or proofreading. You may book multiple edits for the same manuscript. Each edit includes one pass of the manuscript, and additional passes must be negotiated separately.
All invoices will be in USD via PayPal.
When you reach out to me about an edit, I will supply a quote for the fee, based on word count, level of editing needed, and assessment of a representative sample. You and I will agree on the start date and the delivery deadline.
If the scope of the work turns out to be greater than initially estimated, I reserve the right to renegotiate the fee and/or the deadline.
I charge nonrefundable deposits—$50 for a novella and $100 for a full-length novel. This will be invoiced through PayPal upon booking any edit. The money goes toward the final cost of the edit. Each deposit covers ONE rescheduling; rescheduling twice will require a new deposit.
The full amount of the editing fee is to be paid in full before editing begins. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, let me know and we can work out a payment plan.
I charge a $75 cancelation fee for any bookings canceled within 30 days of the scheduled edit. Bookings canceled 31+ days before the edit will not be charged a cancelation fee, but the deposit will not be refunded.
Any manuscript that is not delivered at least 24 hours before the start date will be charged a delay fee—$50 per week late (or fraction thereof). If it is delayed more than 2 weeks, it will also be charged the $75 cancelation fee (so $175 total) and considered canceled.
I will work with manuscripts in chunks, but I charge a partial manuscript fee—a flat $50 for a manuscript delivered in chunks at different times (i.e., not a full, complete manuscript). This is separate from the editing rate and must be paid with the first chunk.
I charge a rush fee. My editing rate increases by $.001 per day under three weeks.
The free 1000-word sample edit is not required for booking an edit. If you ask me for a sample edit, you are not obligated to hire me for the full editing project.
I require contracts, to be signed by both me and the author before any given edit. You can find a sample contract here. By signing the contract, you confirm you’re agreeing to the terms and conditions on this page.
I use either Google Docs or Microsoft Word, to be agreed upon in email communication before editing begins. I will always use Suggestions or Track Changes so you can see my work. If I have questions or commentary on your work, I’ll leave those in the comments. I will reach out to you directly for any questions on style preferences that immediately impact my work.
I default to Merriam-Webster and Chicago Manual of Style with American spelling, unless you specify another preferred reference.
If you provide me a style sheet, I will use it. Unless otherwise negotiated, I will not create a style sheet for you.
Your work and any communication about it will be confidential. I will never upload your files to external websites or third parties. Your work is copyrighted by you.
You are not required to mention me in the work’s acknowledgments or credits.
I do not use AI to edit. I will never upload your manuscript to any AI program. I prefer not to work with manuscripts generated by AI.
Editing is subjective. I cannot guarantee a 100-percent error-free manuscript. I will always do my best and will respect your voice and your work.
I do not offer developmental edits. I cannot guarantee a realistic, logical, or reasonable story. I do not do research on the subject material. I only work on the sentence level to enhance the words on the page.
I cannot guarantee an agent, a publisher, a book deal, reviews, ratings, or popularity with readers.
I am not responsible for how you use my suggested edits. I am not responsible for how you use the manuscript, who you send it to, any changes you or others make to it, or any platforms you upload it to after my work is complete.
The editing work will be carried out by me alone. I will never subcontract edits to third parties.
I am based in Sedona, AZ, USA, working in Phoenix time. I will always do my best to respond to communication in a timely manner, but you and I may not be working in the same time zone.
This agreement is subject to the laws of the United States.
